About Augusta University

President George Washington attended examinations at the Academy of Richmond County in 1791. At the time, the school offered post-secondary studies in Latin, French, Greek, algebra, and trigonometry in order to prepare students to transfer to university. The school, which opened in 1783, was the first chartered academy in the state.

In 1817, a board was established to look at the need for medical education in the area and, in 1818, a ten-bed City Hospital was constructed on land purchased from the Academy trustees. Ten years later, the Medical Academy of Georgia was established at this location, becoming the Medical Institute of Georgia in 1928 and the Medical College of Georgia in 1833.

During the Civil War, the Academy of Richmond County became a hospital and the medical college became a surgeons’ quarters with the amphitheater serving as an operating room. When the war ended in 1865, the medical college resumed classes while the Academy served as a headquarters for federal troops for two more years before classes resumed.

In 1910, the Academy came under the control of the Richmond County Board of Education and a formal fifth year was added in order to provide college preparatory studies. The medical college moved to a new campus in 1913. In 1925, the Academy became the Junior college of Augusta, the first chartered junior college in Georgia. In 1932, the school became part of the University System of Georgia.
