About Coe College

Coe College is a small college in Iowa affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. Established in 1851, the college opened as the School of the Prophets. It was the brainchild of Reverend Jones who worked to raise money for seminary students. He used those funds to help students in the Midwest pay for the cost of attending school in the east. Daniel Coe was a local farmer who donated $1,500 and requested that the reverend open a new school in Iowa. That donation along with other funds he acquired led to the opening of this new school. The school would then become the Cedar Rapids Collegiate Institute, one of the only schools in the Midwest that accepted both men and women. Coe did not become a full college until 1881 but earned full accreditation less than two decades later.

Its location in Cedar Rapids allows the college to offer a number of field experiences for its students. Most students will do internships in their fields of study before they graduate. A large number of graduates also stay in the Cedar Rapids area too. It receives funding from public organizations and the government to cover the cost of research programs and other opportunities. The college has an average class size of only 16 students and an enrollment of around 1,400 students today.

Coe College Accreditation Details

Students applying to Coe College might worry about whether they can get financial aid. The college can offer and grant financial aid packages because it has regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). This is also what allows the college to accept the credits its students earned from other schools. Its nursing and music programs have accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

Coe College Application Requirements

Coe College welcomes students to apply if they enrolled in college before or if they have no college experience. All first-year students will follow the same application process. The college recommends that students schedule a campus tour to learn more about Cedar Rapids and the campus itself. Students can use either the Common Application or the Coe College Application. Though both allow students to create their own individual accounts, the Common Application allows them to apply to multiple schools other than Coe. Those who only want to apply to Coe should use the college’s own application.

This application walks students through the steps of creating a new account and logging into that account. They will need to verify that their email addresses are correct before using the application though. Once they log out and return to the site, they can log in with their personal details. The application has multiple sections that allow students to share their grades, extracurricular activities, test scores, and other information. After completing the application, they can provide the college with their transcripts and test scores. Coe College asks that students put down an enrollment deposit when they get an acceptance letter too. The deadline for early decision is November 15. The college also has an early action deadline of December 10 and a final deadline of March 1 for all applications.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The total cost of attending Coe College is more than $50,000 a year. This includes the $350 in fees that all students pay and a tuition rate of $45,230 each year. Students will also pay around $9,800 per year for room and board. Those who live with their families only pay the college’s tuition and miscellaneous fees. Coe requires that college students live on-campus unless their families live close to that campus or they are married.

Freshmen attending Coe receive an average of more than $42,000 a year in financial aid, and around 99% of all students attending the college receive an aid package. Students can submit the FAFSA at the same time that they complete their college application. Their answers and information on this form are what determines if they qualify for federal subsidized loans, grants and other types of aid such as acceptance into a work-study program. Coe offers scholarships for first-time college students and transfer students too. The trustee scholarship gives students up to $28,000 a year, and other scholarship programs cover the full cost of tuition. Coe College recommends that students applying to any of its degree programs apply for financial aid from the college and from the government.
