About Emory and Henry College

Emory and Henry College was founded on September 30, 1836, by Methodist Episcopal Church leader John Emory and Founding Father statesman Patrick Henry at Wiley Hall. Two years later, President Charles Collins welcomed its inaugural class of 60, which included General J.E.B. Stuart. During the Civil War, it was used by the Confederate States Army as a hospital until 1865. Southwest Virginia’s oldest higher institution reopened that August. By 1918, E&H was merged with Martha Washington College to become fully coeducational. Entering Emory and Henry College is classified “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s because only 1,030 of the 1,426 Fall 2017 applicants were victorious for 72 percent acceptance.
