Degrees & Continuing Education at Hamline University

Hamline University houses its programs in three schools and one department with degrees available at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students may also study law or enroll in continuing education classes. Classes are offered at the Saint Paul campus, as well as online through the university’s distance learning program. Some of the most popular majors at the university include those in the social sciences, business, English, marketing, psychology, and management. Many programs are offered at multiple levels so that students can choose from majors, minors, licensing programs, certificates, and doctorates. For example, students can enroll in education programs at the major, minor, post-baccalaureate, master’s, doctorate, and co-major levels.

Some of the areas of study available for undergraduate students include accounting, biochemistry, Chinese, digital media arts, economics, finance, German, history, and many other subjects. Other programs include those in women’s studies, sociology, religion, psychology, and public health sciences. Additionally, the university has a handful of pre-professional programs available to students in the areas of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and medicine.

The university also offers several degrees in law with study options like a Paralegal Certificate, a Pre-Law Program, and combination degrees that award law degrees alongside a Master of Business Administration, Master of Public Administration, or Master of Fine Arts. Students can also earn a law degree alongside a Master in Nonprofit Management or enroll in the 3-3 program, which helps students earn their undergraduate and law degrees in six years rather than the traditional seven years. Students can concentrate in many complementary areas before entering law school with majors available in history, criminology, religion, psychology, communications, economics, and others.

Students who choose to enroll in online classes may earn a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology or a Bachelor of Business Administration through the university’s degree completion program. Graduate programs include the Master of Public Administration degree, which is a hybrid program with online and onsite classes and the Masters in the Study of Law program, which is offered completely online. Education programs offered online include the online Master’s Degree in ESL and the graduate degree in Natural Science & Environmental Education program, which is available partially online. The university also offers several certificates in education that include an Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate, a Bullying Prevention Certificate, and an Environmental Education Certificate.

About Hamline University

Hamline University was established in 1854 and was named after a bishop in the United Methodist Church who donated $25,000 to help build the school. The university was the first institution of higher learning to be established in Minnesota. The university is also part of the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities. Around 3,700 students attend the university, which is located in Saint Paul. Classes are housed within the School of Education, College of Liberal Arts, School of Business, and a separate department for creative writing programs. The school’s official colors are gray and burgundy, and the urban campus in Saint Paul covers 77 acres. The first classes offered at the school were held in the upper floor of the village general store, and classes moved into the school’s first official building in 1856.

Hamline University Accreditation Details

The Higher Learning Commission has accredited Hamline University to award degrees, and the university is also affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is registered with the Minnesota Office of Higher Education. Within the School of Education, programs have been accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Minnesota Board of Teaching, and the Minnesota Board of School Administrators. Hamline University Application Requirements

The first-year student application checklist for Hamline University includes the official application, academic records, standardized test scores, and teacher recommendations. Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition for undergraduate students is $40,284 per year for students enrolled in 12 to 18 credits. Students in part-time study will pay $1,259 per credit. Fees a student may need to pay include a Student Activity fee, Health Services fee, Facilities fee, Technology fee, and New Student fee. Students should also budget $400 for the required deposit to confirm enrollment. Students who want to enroll in graduate programs will pay a rate based on their program. For example, the Master of Arts in Education program is $480 per credit and may also require fees like a Course Materials fee, International Student fee, and Program Administrative fee. Meanwhile, the Master of Business Administration program is $755 per credit with similar required fees.

Students may apply for federal financial aid when they attend Hamline University. Aid types may include grants, scholarships, or loans. Students who qualify for financial aid will receive an award letter that indicates what type of loans or grants they’ve been given by the Office of Financial Aid. In addition to federal loans through the country’s official student loan program, students may also qualify for or want to apply for alternative loans that come from private banks. Scholarships and grants through the university are available to undergraduate and graduate students, and there are also a variety of state gift aid options that may be available to students. Hamline University reveals that more than 90 percent of its students receive some type of financial aid with many students qualifying for first-generation scholarships, college readiness scholarships, and academic scholarships.
