About University of Connecticut

Charles and Augusta Storrs donated a former orphanage, farmland, barns and $6,000 to establish an agricultural school in Connecticut in 1880. A year later, Governor Hobart Bigelow signed legislation establishing the Storrs Agricultural School. The school was renamed Storrs Agricultural School in 1891 and women were admitted the same year. Also in 1891, the school became Connecticut’s land-grant institution.

The name of the school changed to Connecticut Agricultural College in 1899 and, in 1933, the school became Connecticut State College. In 1939, it became the University of Connecticut. Today, the university is one of the top public research universities in the country with more than 30,000 students enrolled.

University of Connecticut Application Requirements

Freshman applicants must complete the Common Application and submit the required fee. Students must provide official high school transcripts as well as official SAT or ACT scores.

Applicants who have completed at least 12 credit hours after graduating from high school must have a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher. They must be in good standing at the last school attended and must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities.

Applicants to graduate programs must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university and must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. They must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 over their past two years of undergraduate study and a cumulative GPA of 3.5 in their final year. GRE or GMAT scores may also be required.

The University of Connecticut Tuition and Financial Aid

Full-time tuition at the University of Connecticut is $9,858 for residents and $30,038 for out-of-state residents. Graduate tuition is $678 per credit hour for residents and $1,674 per credit hour for non-residents.

In order to be eligible for financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). All students are asked to complete the FAFSA despite income as some assistance may be merit-based. The average amount of financial aid awarded at the University of Connecticut is $400 million annually. The school awards over $154 million in grants and scholarships while $54 million is issued in tuition waivers.
