Colleges and universities across the country are closing their doors to their own students amidst the global coronavirus pandemic. As traditional classes are canceled and postsecondary instruction moves online to mitigate the spread of the virus, some of these same institutions are welcoming COVID-19 patients and healthcare workers to campus. This is all part of a nationwide effort to battle this unique public health crisis.

Biomedical engineers at Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering are repurposing an Ebola testing tool for use amid the coronavirus crisis. Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, the engineers are working towards a 30-minute or less test result. It could be months before the diagnostic method is sent to the FDA for approval.
Duke is also collaborating with UNC-Chapel Hill and East Carolina University to determine the number of area cases of Covid-19 among patients who experience mild symptoms or who have no symptoms at all.
Duke researchers are also investigating the possibility that smartwatches could help in the detection of early signs of Covid-19. Participants of the study will wear one of these watches daily and respond to a questionnaire. Researchers will evaluate whether the watches can detect symptoms and/or predict how mild or severe the infection will be.

The University of Redland is feeding its community members using items from its disaster preparedness food storage. The school recently donated almost 10,000 pounds of food, including fruit, oatmeal, and pasta, to nearby Family Services Association of Redlands for distribution to local residents.
“We have always been committed to working hand-in-hand with our local community,” said University of Redlands President Ralph W. Kuncl. “Given the pressing needs caused by the pandemic, there is no better time than now to lend support to our longtime partner Family Service Association of Redlands …”

University of Toledo researchers are investigating the potential of the antidepressant drug Prozac to treat the novel coronavirus. Early studies suggest the drug could prevent the immune system from overreacting to the virus, a phenomenon that causes patients to deteriorate. The trial is one of the first of its kind to be conducted in the U.S.

Economic researchers at Virginia Tech are studying the effects of the coronavirus on the U.S. economy . Among other revelations, the study found that the national lockdown cost Americans over $1 trillion dollars in just one month.
The university is also beginning Covid-19 testing efforts . With emergency permission from the FDA, Virginia Tech will be using labs on its Blacksburg and Roanoke campuses to help area medical centers with backlogged testing.
